The Short Answer

Safety and security window film is a thick, optically clear polyester film bonded to the interior or exterior face of glass to hold it together when it breaks. Its primary protective function is glass retention: on impact from a break-in attempt, accident, storm debris or pressure event, the film keeps the shattered fragments locked in place instead of scattering as dangerous shards. VissionGuard installs a graded range of clear safety films, from a cost-effective 4 MIL film up to heavy-duty 8 MIL and 12 MIL grades, all combining glass retention with strong UV control and a Class A fire rating while keeping the glass looking natural. These films are a proven secondary safety layer, but they are not bullet-proof or blast-proof.

The Pillar Explained

One Film Family, Many Threats Managed

Ordinary annealed glass is the weakest point of almost any building. When it fails it breaks into sharp, fast-moving fragments that cause the majority of injuries in break-ins, accidents and blast events. Safety and security window film addresses that single vulnerability by turning a fragile pane into a retained, held-together unit.

VissionGuard specifies film by thickness and layer count to match the level of protection a space needs. The entry-level 4 MIL film is a cost-effective, near-invisible anti-shatter upgrade for general glazing. The 8 MIL clear film steps up the safety and forced-entry performance, while the thicker 12 MIL clear film adds the greatest tensile strength and break resistance for higher-risk glass. The 8 MIL and 12 MIL grades are two-ply constructions; all three use a pressure-sensitive molecular-bond adhesive.

Because safety film is applied to your existing glass, there is no demolition, no replacement panes and minimal disruption. It also pairs naturally with the wider VissionGuard glass range, from solar and heat-control window film to switchable smart film for privacy.

⚠ Important: what this film does and does not do

VissionGuard safety and security film is engineered for glass retention, holding fragments together to reduce injury and delay forced entry. It is not bullet-proof and not blast-proof, and it is not a substitute for ballistic-rated or laminated security glazing. For premises requiring ballistic or dedicated blast protection, purpose-built security glass systems are required. Safety film serves as an important secondary safety measure, not a primary structural barrier.

The 4 MIL film is the cost-effective, near-invisible entry point for glass retention and UV control. Stepping up to 8 MIL and then 12 MIL increases tensile and break strength for higher-risk glazing: the 12 MIL film reaches a break strength of 340 lbs/in, the key figure for forced-entry and impact resistance. For dedicated heat rejection, a nano-ceramic solar film delivers far higher solar performance and can be specified alongside any safety film where both goals matter.

Tested & Certified

Test Standards Behind the Film

VissionGuard safety films are manufactured to internationally recognised test standards, so performance claims are backed by defined laboratory methods rather than marketing.

ASTM E-84

Surface Burning / Fire

Class A interior finish rating for both flame spread and smoke development, the highest classification for building materials.

ASTM D-1044

Abrasion Resistance

Taber Abrader test confirming less than a 5% haze increase after 100 revolutions, so the film stays clear under normal use.

BS EN 410

UV & Solar Characteristics

Verifies weighted UV transmission below 1%, protecting interiors, furnishings and artwork from sun-driven fading.

ASTM D-882

Tensile Properties

Measures the tensile strength and elongation of the film, the mechanical basis for its glass-retention performance.

ASTM D-3330

Peel Adhesion

Quantifies the bond between film and glass, ensuring the retained fragments stay anchored to the film after breakage.

ISO 9001

Manufacturing Quality

Film is produced under an ISO 9001 quality-assured system, with each core identified and labelled by product and run number.

Independent blast-range performance

In an independent explosion-range trial, two-ply Garware safety film on 6mm annealed glass was subjected to a 100kg TNT-equivalent charge at 31 metres. The filmed glass achieved a Low Hazard classification under UK PSDB and ISO methods (equivalent to GSA performance condition 3A–3B), with the two-ply film retaining the majority of glass fragments even under a pressure load well above standard requirements. This demonstrates strong glass-retention behaviour under extreme load, while remaining a safety film rather than a certified blast barrier.

Why It Matters

What Safety & Security Film Protects Against

One clear film, several very different threats managed for homes, offices and public buildings across Saudi Arabia.

👮

Break-In & Forced Entry

The film holds shattered glass together, turning a quick smash-and-reach into a slow, noisy struggle that delays intruders and buys response time.

🪨

Flying Glass Injury

In accidents, storms or impacts, retained fragments stay bonded to the film instead of scattering as sharp shards across the room.

🌪

Storm & Wind Debris

Adds meaningful impact resistance to glazing exposed to wind-borne debris and sudden pressure changes.

UV Fading

Blocks the ultraviolet light that fades furniture, flooring, stock and fittings, up to more than 99% on the 8 and 12 MIL grades.

🔥

Fire-Rated Surface

Carries a Class A ASTM E-84 rating for flame spread and smoke development, suitable for regulated building interiors.

💡

Everyday Solar Comfort

Rejects a share of solar energy and cuts glare, so the film earns its place on the glass every day, not only in an emergency.

Questions & Answers

Safety & Security Window Film FAQs

Is safety and security window film bullet-proof or blast-proof?

No. Safety and security window film is not bullet-proof and not blast-proof, and it is not a substitute for ballistic-rated or laminated security glazing. Its purpose is glass retention: when the glass breaks, the film holds the fragments together to significantly reduce injury from flying shards and to delay forced entry. For premises that need ballistic or dedicated blast protection, purpose-built security glass systems are required.

What is the difference between 4 MIL, 8 MIL and 12 MIL safety film?

The number refers to film thickness, and thicker film means greater strength. The 4 MIL film is the cost-effective, near-invisible entry option for general glass retention and UV control. The 8 MIL film is a two-ply grade with a break strength of 220 lbs/in for stronger safety and forced-entry performance. The 12 MIL film is the toughest, reaching 340 lbs/in for the highest-risk glazing. All three carry a Class A fire rating and hold broken glass together; the right choice depends on the threat level and budget of the space.

How does safety window film hold broken glass together?

The film is a tough, two-ply polyester bonded to the glass with a pressure-sensitive molecular-bond adhesive. When the glass shatters, the film's tensile strength and adhesion keep the fragments attached to it as a single retained sheet, rather than allowing them to scatter as loose shards. This is the core mechanism behind its safety, forced-entry and blast-mitigation behaviour.

Does safety film also reduce heat and UV?

Yes. VissionGuard clear safety films block harmful ultraviolet light, up to more than 99% on the 8 and 12 MIL grades, and reject a portion of solar energy while reducing glare. UV blocking protects interiors and furnishings from fading. Where strong heat rejection is the priority, a nano-ceramic solar film delivers far higher solar performance and can be combined with safety film.

Is the film clear, or will it darken my windows?

The safety films VissionGuard installs are optically clear. The 4 MIL film transmits roughly 87 to 90% of visible light, the 8 MIL film about 89% and the 12 MIL film about 88%, so the glass keeps its natural appearance with only a slight reduction in brightness and no mirrored or tinted look.

Can safety film be installed on existing glass?

Yes. Safety and security film is applied to your existing glass, so there is no need to replace panes or carry out demolition. Our technicians clean and prepare the surface, custom-cut the film to each pane and apply it bubble-free, with minimal disruption to your property.
