What Is Smart Film? The Complete Switchable Privacy Guide
Turn ordinary glass private at the tap of a switch — no new windows, no curtains. Here's what smart film is, how it works, what it costs, and where it fits in Saudi homes and offices.
Smart film is a self-adhesive switchable film that you apply onto existing glass to make it turn from frosted to clear on demand. It uses PDLC — polymer-dispersed liquid crystal. With the power off the film is frosted and private; apply a low-voltage current and it becomes transparent in under a second. Because it bonds to glass you already own, smart film delivers the same switchable privacy as laminated smart glass, but without replacing your windows or partitions — making it the lower-cost, lower-disruption route to instant privacy.
Curtains gather dust, blinds break, and frosted glass is private but permanent. Smart film solves all three at once: it gives you a clean sheet of glass that is opaque when you want privacy and clear when you want light and a view. Over the last few years it has moved from luxury showrooms into everyday use across Saudi Arabia — in villa bathrooms, majlis windows, clinic partitions, boardrooms and shopfronts. This guide explains exactly what smart film is, how it differs from smart glass, what drives the price, and how to decide if it suits your space. What Is Smart Film, Exactly?
Smart film — also called switchable film, PDLC film or electric privacy film — is a thin, multi-layer film that changes its appearance when electricity is applied. At its core is a layer of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal sandwiched between two transparent conductive coatings, all protected by clear outer layers. The whole stack is thinner than a credit card and is bonded directly onto the surface of your existing glass.
The key idea is that the film, not the glass, does the work. You do not replace the window; you upgrade it. Once the film is applied and connected to a power supply, a discreet switch, remote or smart-home control lets you flip the glass between private and clear whenever you like.
How Does Smart Film Work?
The switching effect comes down to how liquid crystals behave with and without an electric current:
- Power off (frosted): the liquid-crystal droplets inside the film sit in random directions. They scatter incoming light, so the surface looks milky and you cannot see a clear image through it. The glass is private, but light still passes through.
- Power on (clear): a low-voltage current creates an electric field that lines the droplets up. Light then travels straight through and the film becomes transparent — almost instantly.

Key point
Smart film is private by default. It only uses electricity to turn clear, so if the power is off — or cut — the glass stays frosted and private, never exposed.

Smart Film vs Smart Glass: Which Should You Choose?
Both give the same frosted-to-clear effect with the same PDLC technology. The difference is whether the active layer is built into a new glass unit or applied to your current one.
| Factor | Smart Film (applied) | Laminated Smart Glass |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Existing glass / retrofit | New builds / full replacement |
| Installation | Bonded onto current glass | Glass unit swapped out |
| Disruption | Low — no glazing removed | Higher — glazing replaced |
| Relative cost | Lower | Higher |
| Switching effect | Frosted ↔ clear | Frosted ↔ clear |
For the majority of homes and offices that already have glass in place, applied smart film is the practical, cost-effective choice. Laminated smart glass makes sense mainly when glazing is being installed from scratch. You can compare related options on our smart switchable glass film page.
How Much Does Smart Film Cost?
Smart film is priced per square metre, and the final figure depends on a few things: the total glass area, the number of separate panes, the film grade, and the complexity of running a tidy power supply to each location. Larger continuous areas tend to cost less per square metre than many small, separate panes, because installation and wiring are more efficient.
Because every space is different, the only accurate price is a measured one. VissionGuard provides a free site survey and a clear written quotation before any work begins, so there are no surprises. Request a quote through our contact page.
Where Smart Film Works Best
Smart film suits almost any interior glass where you want privacy without losing light. Common uses across Saudi Arabia include villa bathrooms and majlis windows, office partitions and boardrooms that switch private for meetings, clinic and consultation rooms that need hygienic, curtain-free privacy, and retail glass that goes opaque after hours. Beyond privacy, the PDLC layer blocks close to 99% of ultraviolet light, helping protect furniture and finishes from fading, and its frosted state softens harsh glare — a useful bonus in the Kingdom's strong sun.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is smart film the same as smart glass?
Smart film and smart glass use the same PDLC switchable technology, but smart film is applied as a self-adhesive layer onto existing glass, while smart glass has the layer built into a new laminated glass unit. Smart film is the lower-cost retrofit option because your current glass stays in place.
Can smart film be applied to my existing windows?
Yes. Smart film is designed to bond onto glass you already own, so there is no need to replace windows or partitions. A technician cleans the glass, applies the custom-cut film bubble-free, and connects a discreet power supply, turning your existing pane into switchable privacy glass.
Does smart film stay private if the power goes off?
Yes. Smart film is frosted and private in its default unpowered state and only turns clear when electricity is applied. A power cut therefore leaves the glass private rather than exposed, which makes privacy the safe default.
How long does smart film last?
Quality PDLC smart film is built to last for many years of normal indoor use, and reputable installations are backed by a warranty against defects. Keeping it clean with a soft, non-abrasive cloth and avoiding harsh chemicals helps preserve clarity and switching performance over time.
